Consultation, Education & Research Staff

Rev. James Flavin, LMHC

Rev. James FlavinFather James Flavin, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA, provides religious workshops, convocations and retreats through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. His primary position is functioning as the Director of Clinical Operations for Saint John Vianney Center, working with its multi-disciplinary treatment team. He is available for all admission inquiries. Fr. Flavin was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston in 1987. He received graduate degrees from Saint John's Seminary, Boston, and Boston College. As both a priest and a licensed psychotherapist he brings a well-rounded view of healthy living through spirituality and psychology. He has given workshops and retreats in dioceses throughout the United States and Canada.

Mary M. Lindsay, S.S.J, Ph.D.

Sr. Mary LindsaySr. Mary Lindsay, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA., provides religious workshops through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. Her primary position is as a staff psychologist for the Saint John Vianney Center functioning as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical/Counseling Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She has taught at Chestnut Hill College and has worked as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team at St. Joseph Hall for Girls in Philadelphia and St. Gabriel Hall in Audubon, PA. Throughout her career she has provided individual, marital, family and group therapy. Sr. Mary Lindsay has extensive experience conducting religious workshops and group facilitation.

Fernando A. Ortiz, Ph.D.

Dr. Fernando A. Ortiz, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA., provides religious workshops, consultations and assessments through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. Dr. Ortiz received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Washington State University. He has two Masters degree's; one in psychology and one in Religious Studies. His undergraduate degree is in philosophy from Saint John's Seminary College. After his Ph.D., he completed a postdoctoral specialization in counseling with multicultural populations. He is a licensed psychologist in Washington State and is certified by the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He is currently the Director of the Counseling Center at Gonzaga University, in Spokane, WA. Prior, he was an assistant professor of clinical psychology at the doctoral program at Alliant International University in San Diego, California, where he taught personality assessment, psychotherapy, and multicultural competencies development for psychologists. He has co-authored many peer-reviewed venues, including, the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and the Journal of Research in Personality. He works closely with Catholic Dioceses and seminary personnel, providing consultation and training on the psychological treatment and screening of candidates to the priesthood, especially in regards to multicultural seminary and religious students and clergy. As a clinician, he has extensive experience with people in service ministry and in the helping professions. He has a particular interest in promoting self-care, stress management, and resilience in people who serve in these important roles within the Church community.

Jeffrey T. Feathergill, Psy.D., HSPP

Dr. Jeffrey T. Feathergill, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA., provides religious workshops, consultations and assessments through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. Dr. Feathergill received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Niles College of Loyola University, which was the college seminary for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and attended two years of graduate studies in Theology at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL. He served as Director of the Counseling Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL, and as Director of the Depression Clinic at Madison Center in South Bend, IN. He has also provided psychotherapy to students at the Counseling Center of the University of Notre Dame. He has taught courses in psychology, as an adjunct professor, at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and Indiana University, South Bend, IL. He currently has a private practice treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. He provides psychological assessments of seminary applicants for the Diocese of South Bend, the Congregation of the Holy Cross, the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. He offers psychotherapy and counseling to seminarians, priests and other religious, serves as a consultant to administrators of religious communities and provides psychological services at Holy Cross House, an assisted living and nursing home for the priests and brothers of the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

Mariette Danilo, Ph.D.

Mariette DaniloDr. Mariette Danilo, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA, provides religious workshops through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. Dr. Danilo received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Columbia University, New York, NY. She was a researcher at the Health Behavior Institute of Cornell University Medical College-New York Hospital Center in NYC, and has lectured on topics in Health Psychology at Columbia University. She has taught graduate courses in psychology and has extensive program development experience, developing applications from the social sciences for real life settings. Dr. Danilo has worked within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and has implemented parish assessments and program development for the Catholic Church. She has extensive experience as a facilitator and lecturer.

Constance Phelps, SCL, Ph.D.

Constance PhelpsConstance Phelps, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA, provides religious workshops through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington University in Missouri. She has extensive facilitation and consulting experience and has served on the past boards of St. Vincent Clinic, Providence/ Saint John Health Center, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System and the Leadership Conference for Women Religious (LCWR), in addition to being the LCWR former President.

Kathryn T. Pierce

Kathryn PierceKathryn Pierce, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA, provides religious workshops through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. She also functions as the Founder and Executive Director of Intercultural Consultation Services in Detroit, MI assisting those who are called to cross cultural boundaries in their ministry and living. Sister Pierce has coordinated a variety of workshops for individual missioners and leadership focusing on the multifaceted issues of effective and working relationships including orientation and re-entry. For the past fifteen years she has focused on the acculturation process for International Priests entering ministry with the Catholic Church in United States. Throughout her career she has provided counseling, spiritual direction and retreat experiences, as well as workshop facilitation and consultations around the world. She has traveled extensively nationally and internationally including international travel to South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, South Pacific, Asia, Eastern and Central Europe and the British Isles providing such workshops.

Barry H. Sargent, Ph.D.

Barry SargentDr. Barry Sargent, a consultant with the Saint John Vianney Center in Downingtown, PA, provides religious workshops through the Consultation, Education and Research Department Outreach Services. He received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. He has taught at the undergraduate and the graduate level, and was director of Kino Institute of Theological Studies and Pastoral Ministry Formation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, in Arizona. He has extensive experience as a facilitator for retreats, parish missions, pastoral development and religious workshops. He has also been active on committees for organizations such as the USCCB Commission on Certification and Accreditation, the Marianist Life National Advisory Committee, and the Diocesan Commission on Ecumenism and Inter-religious Affairs.
