A Necessary Conversation: A Gathering of Experts
June 13-15, 2012 - The first of two landmark conferences which took place in June, 2010, was repeated on June 13 through 15, 2012 for those who were unable to attend the first gathering. Specialists from the fields of priestly formation and psychology attended the event at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Attendees included formation personnel, assessing psychologists of varying experience levels, and seminary staff who discussed what is necessary to carefully and effectively select candidates for priestly formation.
Opening the conference for the second time, was Len Sperry, M.D., Ph.D. whose presentation, Psychology's View of its Role in Seminary Formation, included a discussion of the current "Guidelines for the Use of Psychology in the Admission and Formation of Candidates for the Priesthood". Also opening the three day event was Reverend Shaun L. Mahoney, whose presentation was titled, The Catholic Church's View of the Role of Psychology in Seminary Formation".
Special recognition goes to Reverend Joseph Bongard, Reverend Patrick Welsh, and the staff of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary as well as Reverend Gerard McGlone, S.J., Ph.D., Mr. Edward Maguire, LCSW and the staff of Saint John Vianney Center.
